Local Cancer Patients Benefit from
2010 Dr. Bill Shelton’s Totally Awesome Fishing
Adventure
Although
the top 10 stringer weight teams won cash prizes
recently at the 2010 Dr. Bill Shelton’s Totally
Awesome Fishing Adventure, the real winners are the
patients benefitting from the $32,000 raised through
participants and sponsorships. The tournament was
held this month at the Dr. Bill and Emily Shelton
Pavilion at Cassels Boykin Park on Lake Sam Rayburn.
All proceeds from the tournament help needy cancer
patients purchase medications and even fuel to help
them get to the Arthur Temple Sr. Regional Cancer
Center for treatment.
The top 10 teams with the heaviest
stringer weights were: 1st place- Paul Eason and
Tommy Howard with a weight of 24.00 lbs.; 2nd
place-Steve Evans and Jay Bennett with a weight of
22.52 lbs.; 3rd place-Jeremy Simmons and Marty
Sowell with a weight of 18.07 lbs.; 4th place- Eddy
Gresham and Gary Greham with a weight of 17.80 lbs.;
5th place- Clarence Denby and Daniel Denby with a
weight of 17.00 lbs.; 6th place- Billy Miller and
Travis Ballard with a weight of 16.94 lbs.; 7th
place- Bradley and Donald Stringer with a weight of
16.23 lbs.; 8th place- Russell Sparks and Lanton
Churnley with a weight of 15.60 lbs.; 9th place-
Kenny Jones and Jason Bridges with a weight of
15.48 lbs.; and 10th place- Gary McDonald and Philip
Crelia with a weight of 15.34 lbs.
The top three Big Bass winners were: 1st place- Paul
Eason weighing in a bass at 8.89 lbs.; 2nd place-
Jerry Simmons weighing in a bass at 8.23 lbs.; and
3rd place- Steve Evans weighing in a bass at 7.87
lbs.
While
the adults took to the lake in search of the biggest
bass, the tournament’s smallest anglers grabbed
their fishing poles and headed to the banks of Sam
Rayburn for the 3rd Annual Dr. Bill Shelton’s
Totally Awesome Kid Fish. All participants received
prizes for participating. Cody Youngblood went home
with the 1st place trophy and Aaron Reese Caudle
went home with 2nd.
Keeping Local Industries
Healthy
Healthy
employees mean productive employees. Pilgrim’s Pride
is one of many local industries taking advantage of
free health fairs offered by Memorial Health System
of East Texas. The Lufkin hospital recently reached
out to the Pilgrim’s Pride 1000 plus employees and
offered valuable health care information from
breast, colorectal and prostate cancer awareness,
and back safety prevention to diabetes and stroke
education. Participants also had an opportunity to
get their blood pressure checked. To schedule a free
health fair for your business, contact 936-639-7675.
Lips to Snout:
That’s What Memorial Fundraising is About
As
the deadline for United Way fundraising approached,
it was a neck and neck race between Mario Estrella,
Vice President of Patient Services at Memorial
Health System of East Texas, and Ken Carter,
Director of Management Information Systems (MIS), to
see who would raise the most money. As employees
graciously gave to determine a winner, Mario
Estrella came in first place and was awarded a kiss
from a pig. Along with other employee incentives,
Memorial Health System of East Texas employees
raised over $34,000 to help fund United Way
agencies. Pictured are: Ken Carter, Lindsey Krubbs,

Baby Santa’s at Memorial Health System of East Texas
Baby Santa’s will be
leaving Memorial Health System of East Texas
throughout the month of December! Thanks to the hard
work of the Laureate Eta Chi chapter of Beta Sigma
Phi, babies delivered in the Henderson Women’s and
Children’s Center during the month of December will
receive a Santa hat.
Beta Sigma Phi is a service and cultural
organization that has been making these little hats
for many years and donating them for babies at
Memorial. Santa hats were made by the ladies of the
organization to be given to newborn babies
throughout the month of December. In the past, these
ladies have also made stuffed animals and stockings
that were handed out in the Emergency Room.
Kayla
Malnar, Davion Davis, Caylib William Wade, and
Brandon Alexander Adame sport bright red Santa hats
in celebration of their birth at Memorial Health
System of East Texas. The baby Santa hats were
donated by the Laureate Eta Chi chapter of Beta
Sigma Phi. The ladies of the Lufkin service and
cultural organization spent their time and talents
sewing red “Santa hats” to give to newborn babies
born during the month of December at Memorial Health
System of East Texas.
